How long have you roleplayed your character, if at all?: I’ve never roleplayed before, so this will be my first time roleplaying as Siegfried, and roleplaying in general.

Where have you roleplayed in general and/or with this specific character?: N/A

Have you played the game/watched the movie or anime/read the book or comic, etc. that your character hails from?: Yes. I’ve played both Soul Calibur 2 (PS2 version) and Soul Calibur 3, and have completed the story modes with all characters at least once, Siegfried is one of the characters whose story mode I have completed multiple times. I haven’t played Soul Blade or Soul Calibur, but I’ve read about the events that happen in them from various sources, both online and in-game, due to many of the storylines in the later games being strongly linked to what happens in the previous games, so I would say I’ve got a decent amount of knowledge about them.

Please give us a detailed personal history of your character: Siegfried Schtauffen was born on 6th February 1568 to Sir Frederick and Margaret Schtauffen, in Ober-Getzenburg, Germany. Frederick was a knight who, along with many other citizens of Germany, was rebelling against the Holy Roman Empire, who at the time controlled that country. After Siegfried was born, Frederick returned to Ober-Getzenburg and for a time, lived a relatively peaceful life with his son and wife. As soon as Siegfried was old enough, he began to teach him how to wield a sword, and Siegfried soon developed his own style of wielding a zweihänder.

When Siegfried was around 16 years of age, Frederick was required to go on a crusade that would take him to foreign countries. However, whilst he was away Siegfried became friends with a group of thieves who called themselves ‘Schwarzwind’ and he quickly became their leader. The group devised a plan to ambush the knights who were returning from the crusade, for they would likely carry with them gold and other valuable possessions. And so, late one night Schwarzwind attacked a small group of knights, who were all exhausted, some of them wounded. All of the knights were slain, and Siegfried himself managed to kill the groups commander. Holding the commander’s head up in victory, Siegfried recognised the face as the moonlight caught it. It was the head of his father. Realising what he had done, Siegfried screamed, dropping his father’s head onto the floor, and ran into the forest. The incident shattered Siegfried’s sanity, and the more he thought about what he had seen, the more convinced he became that it was not he who had murdered his father, instead somebody else. He slowly began to go insane.

A little while later Siegfried began to hear rumours of Soul Edge – a sword that was said to be so powerful, it was nigh invincible. In his revenge-seeking madness Siegfried decided that he must find this sword and kill his father’s murderer.

Following the rumours, Siegfried arrived at Ostrheinsburg Castle, which was the residence of Sir Stefan. Siegfried joined Ostrheinsburg Castle’s forces as a soldier, gradually gaining ranks, and slowly coming closer to discovering whether Soul Edge really was in the castle. His chance came when there was a siege in the castle, and in the confusion he searched the castle to find the sword. Eventually he came across Sir Stefan who had in his possession the supposed ‘invincible’ sword. Siegfried killed him, and took the sword, running off to the Black Forest that was near the castle. Reaching the Black Forest, Siegfried inspected the blade, only to find it was not Soul Edge, simply an ordinary sword.

Siegfried left Germany to further his search for Soul Edge. Eventually he arrived at a Spanish harbour, and there he found Soul Edge – along with the corpse of its previous wielder: the pirate Cervantes de Leon. Siegfried reached for the hilt of the sword, but as he did so the corpse lit up in flames and attacked him. Siegfried defeated the flaming corpse (which was in fact Inferno, the ‘soul’ of Soul Edge, that had possessed Cervantes’s dead body) and took the sword.

As soon as Siegfried obtained the cursed sword, a beam of light shot out of his body and lit up the entire earth, and with it a sudden increase in evil energy which affected the world. This was known as the Evil Seed, and caused many who saw the light to go into a murderous rage, turning on anyone in their paths. It was also at this time that Siegfried first heard the whispering voice of Soul Edge, and it proposed a deal: if Siegfried would use the cursed sword to gather souls to help it to restore itself to its former power, then Soul Edge would bring Siegfried’s father back from the dead. Siegfried agreed, and travelled across Europe killing all those with strong souls. Siegfried soon fell victim to the swords power, and became the Azure Knight, Nightmare.

For three years he was Nightmare, striking fear wherever he went. He gained a small group of followers: Astaroth, Aeon Calcos and Ivy – each of them believing that Nightmare would help them in return for them helping him to find souls. They collected many souls, and returned to the ruins of Ostrheinsburg Castle to perform a ceremony that would give Soul Edge back its power.

The ceremony did not take place however because Aeon Calcos and Astaroth were defeated by a group of three heroes – Xianghua, Kilik and Maxi. Ivy chose to leave after she found out from the ninja Taki that Cervantes de Leon, who had been driven mad by Soul Edge’s power, was her father. Nightmare was confronted and defeated by Kilik and Xianghua, who between the two of them held three weapons that would counteract Soul Edge’s power: Kali-Yuga, the staff that absorbed evil energy; Dvapara-Yuga, the mirror that protected it’s wearer from being affected by evil; and Krita-Yuga, which transformed into Soul Calibur.

After the battle, Soul Edge was shattered and weakened, and Siegfried regained control over his body and his sanity. He remembered all that had taken place whilst he was Nightmare, horrified by the memories, and he accepted the fact that it was he who had killed his father, and that Soul Edge never intended to resurrect Frederick, it lied to Siegfried simply so he would agree. He returned to Germany to visit his mother, for it was likely that she was in a state of distress after her husband was murdered and her son vanished. Siegfried got a far as the door to the house, about to knock, when he realised that there was still a chance he could be controlled by Soul Edge and endanger his mother’s life. He left, deciding it would be best if he lived as far away from other civilisation as possible. He was right in his suspicions – Soul Edge did still hold power over him, and its remaining power in his body took over his body whilst he slept and murdered anyone and everyone it could find.

Four years later, and he had again given in to the power of Soul Edge and become Nightmare once more. This time he searched for the fragments of Soul Edge, which had been scattered all over the world when it had shattered. Soul Edge was almost complete, and Nightmare went to Ostrheinsburg Castle to complete the ceremony that had not been completed four years previous.

In the chapel of the castle, as Nightmare was beginning the ceremony, a fencer named Raphael appeared. He himself was seeking the power of the cursed sword. He baited Nightmare, proclaiming “You’re too weak for that, aren’t you?”

Raphael was about to eat his words though, as at the end of a fierce battle, Nightmare defeated him. Just as Nightmare moved to finish Raphael off, Siegfried’s will flickered through Nightmare’s mind, making him pause. Nightmare fought back against Siegfried’s will, not wanting to lose control to the “wretched human”. It was a bad moment to have a battle of consciences, because Raphael saw that something was wrong with Nightmare and took advantage of it. He pierced the centre of Soul Edge with his rapier, and escaped. Nightmare let out an inhuman scream, suddenly his body was full of pain, and his will was weakening and Siegfried was gaining control. Finally Siegfried gained complete control, and there was a flash of light. The spirit sword Soul Calibur appeared, and Siegfried grabbed it and stabbed it into Soul Edge’s eye.

The power of Soul Edge was sealed. However, in sealing Soul Edge’s power, Soul Calibur’s power seamed to disappear as well. Siegfried knew that Soul Edge would only be sealed for a time, and so he vowed to find a way to seal it completely. He smashed the azure armour that Nightmare had worn, and left Ostrheinsburg seeking a way to seal the cursed blade forever. Little did Siegfried know that soon after he left a mysterious man revived Nightmare by casting some sort of spell on the armour, and this meant that temporarily Nightmare had his own body and did not need Siegfried’s.

The journey took him across Europe and Asia. At every place he seemed to find there was somebody who wanted revenge against Nightmare, and fought Siegfried, believing him to be the Azure Knight. Siegfried defeated these people, and in his heart he apologised for the evil deeds of Nightmare. He felt guilty about it, and to make it worse every so often he had a sudden memory of his right arm being disfigured, just as it had been like whilst he was Nightmare.

As his journey continued he met the mysterious man Zasalamel at the Clocktower (which I believe may have been in Germany or in a neighbouring country, in couldn’t quite tell from the map in the game). Zasalamel seemed to know much about the cursed sword, but was withholding the information. Siegfried fought this mysterious man, but he disappeared into thin air after the fight, leaving Siegfried with a promise that they would meet again. Siegfried had more to worry about than Zasalamel however, because he was suddenly aware of Nightmare’s presence some distance away – the problem was that it was getting closer.

Knowing full well that a battle between he and Nightmare would be fought, Siegfried found an abandoned cathedral in a remote place of Europe. Instead of finding Nightmare here however, he found Raphael – the same man who he had met at Ostrheinsburg Chapel. This time however, Raphael was ‘draped in evil energy’. Some things were still the same though, Raphael taunted Siegfried (“You should have killed me when you had the chance!”), and Siegfried still won.

Siegfried ventured further into the Cathedral, and encountered Nightmare just as he had expected.

“I knew you were following me. All right, let’s settle this once and for all, my unforgivable past.”

The two fought a fierce battle, with Siegfried emerging the victor – but only just. He had not long to rest though, because Zasalamel soon appeared. Apparently against his wishes, Soul Edge was absorbed into Zasalamel’s body, transforming him into the monster Abyss. Soul Calibur regained its power now that Soul Edge was no longer sealed. Knowing the only way he’d have a chance against Abyss was to use Soul Calibur, Siegfried picked up the spirit sword and went into battle.

Eventually he won, and Abyss exploded. Siegfried was just about to leave when a searing pain went through his mind. Nightmare was slowly dragging its body towards Siegfried telling him because of the sins Siegfried had committed he had no right to continue living. Just as Nightmare was raising his sword above his head, ready to strike Siegfried, Siegfried grabbed Soul Calibur and destroyed Nightmare. Siegfried was safe until Nightmare returned, but he swore to go against what Nightmare had said, and he would keep on living, no matter what.

(Just to let you know, the incidents in the cathedral have not been confirmed as canon yet by Namco, but it is likely that the majority of it is. I’m following Siegfried’s story mode in Soul Calibur 3 as a reference, and that is what the ending entails.)

Please give us a detailed description of your character's personality: When people play Soul Calibur 3 for the first time, it’s likely that their first thoughts of Siegfried are: a) ‘What happened to him? He was so badass in Soul Calibur 2!’ and b) ‘Why does he have to be so emo?!’. I must stress however, that after playing Soul Calibur 3 enough times, and playing through Siegfried’s story mode, and knowing about his history, it is apparent that he is not some 16th century whiny emo boy (and if at times he is, then it’s very likely that it’s not without reason)

Once upon a time, Siegfried was determined, egotistical, and a little obnoxious. This was before he became Nightmare for the first time, and at the time, he’d not encountered anyone who could actually prove him otherwise and therefore reduce his big-headedness. After Nightmare was defeated by Kilik and Xianghua, and Siegfried regained his sanity, he was greatly affected by what ‘he’ had done. He then was a lot less egotistical and obnoxious, and a hell of a lot more determined, to the point where almost nothing can stop him from his goal, and these personality traits have carried on until he’s 23.

He is self-sacrificing – for example, he is aware of the damage that Soul Edge can do, and basically denies himself a ‘normal’ life, instead trying to save others from the evil of Soul Edge. He’s also very determined to live. This is mainly due to him believing that he must destroy Soul Edge, and that he’s the only one who can do it. However, when he thinks of all those people, and there are probably thousands or them if not more, who have lost loved ones because of Nightmare, he feels incredibly guilty that he’s still alive. The guilt is an important thing in Siegfried’s personality because at times it keeps him rooted to the past and not able to move on.

Siegfried is relatively calm, and before taking action, he’ll think things through. This does not mean, that he’s just going to stand around doing nothing if someone insults him or provokes him. After all, he has his pride – and he’s not going to let it be damaged. It’s at this point when he retaliates that some of his old self is going to appear, and he’s going to be a little more egotistical and obnoxious.

He’s not the type to joke around – few things in his life have let him joke around, and he gives the impression of being a serious person, but not too serious to the point of him being unapproachable. As well as this, he’s very focused and I doubt many things could distract him. Siegfried has a remarkably strong will, and at the same time he is quite stubborn. It’s his strong will and stubbornness that have prevented Nightmare controlling him twice before, so he’s not going to give up on something quickly.

Please give us a detailed physical description of your character: Siegfried stands at 5’6, so he’s a little below the average height of a man, and weighs 132lbs. His silver suit of armour which he is often seen wearing during the events of the Soul Calibur does make him look heavier and a little more intimidating, but since he is lacking this within the Landel’s Institute he will look more like an everyday man, and of course, a lot less intimidating. Physically he is very fit and well muscled, and has been since he was a teenager because of the training his father gave him.

One of Siegfried’s most recognisable features would be his hair, which reaches down to his lower back and is somewhere between golden blond and yellow blond in colour. The hair around his face has been cut since he regained his freedom from Nightmare, and at its longest it is chin length, although there are shorter strands that fall just below his eye. The second recognisable feature would be the scar that cuts down the right side of his face, from above his eyebrow and downwards so that it is level with his mouth. This scar he received at some point during his first three years as Nightmare, presumably from a particularly skilled ‘victim’ (I’m speculating here – It’s never revealed how he got it, only that he didn’t have it during the events of Soul Edge, but did have it during the events of Soul Calibur). Siegfried also has piercing aqua blue eyes, that in certain light, almost look turquoise. His eye colour changes to gold when he becomes Nightmare.

What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's?: Towards the end of Siegfried’s story mode in Soul Calibur 3, just as he’s battling Nightmare. There’s a cutscene in the story mode which shows Nightmare grabbing hold of Siegfried’s sword and throwing him through the air. In the cutscene Siegfried rolls once he hits the floor and gets right back up. Instead I’m going to have him hitting his head on the floor, and when the spots leave his vision, he’ll find himself in Landel’s.

What kinds of magical/special/crazy powers does your character have, if any?: Well, considering the time that I’m taking Siegfried from, I’d say he has no magical or crazy powers that actually benefit him such as super strength or increased speed, since at the time he is a separate being from Nightmare. However, like many of the characters in Soul Calibur, Siegfried can sense evil energy and holy energy both in objects and in people. He’s also special in that he can sense Soul Edge’s presence (and therefore can also sense Nightmare’s presence).

If present, how do you plan to tweak those powers to make him/her appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?: The holy-or-evil ability is going to be lowered dramatically, to the point where it’s just that little distraction at the back of his mind that’s telling him something isn’t quite right, otherwise it would go haywire with all the nurses and monsters. In a similar way the Soul Edge sensing would still be there, but no where near as strong. In the game he’s able to sense it across a small country, which isn’t a sensible scale for the RP. Therefore, if Soul Edge or Nightmare ever did turn up, he’d probably only be able to tell if they were there if he was quite nearby.

Does your character have any other non-magical skills or abilities that we should know about?: Siegfried has been trained from a young age to use a sword, and his chosen weapon is a zweihänder, which he’s particularly good at wielding. He’s also a little knowledgeable to some extent about Soul Edge, due to being the previous wielder and having first-hand experience of what the swords affect is on people.

How about improbable appendages?: None at all

Please give us an idea of where you'd like to take your character within the scope of the Landel's Damned RP: Siegfried will want to get out of Landel’s Institute from the beginning – he has a purpose back in his world, and he intends to fulfil it. Because of his quite guilt-ridden conscience he’ll try to avoid making enemies and getting into fights, instead focusing on making alliances.

What kind of psychological effect do you see Landel's Institute having on your character?: Siegfried won’t panic when he finds himself at Landel’s, but he will most likely be confused about it at first, since Landel’s is EXTREMELY different in both setting and time compared to where Siegfried’s from (Soul Calibur 3 is set in 1591, and he’s being taken from the middle of a battle in a cathedral). It’ll also be quite difficult for him to get his head round the fact that people at Landel’s are from different worlds. After that, he’ll take life at Landel’s seriously – after all, you can’t really joke around at Landel’s when Pyramid Head could be lurking around the next corner during the Nightshift. When Siegfried becomes aware of what goes on during the Nightshift, he’ll start to worry that Martin Landel will somehow get his hands on Soul Edge (Since Soul Edge has that strange ability of finding him wherever he goes, at least from Siegfried’s point of view) and wreak even more havoc on the patients.

Given that this RP takes place in an unsettling and outright horrific environment, how do you justify your character as being appropriate in both body and mind for this kind of setting?: Siegfried’s definitely used to this sort of environment already – or at least the death, violence and generally morbid side of it. He’s never experienced a mental institution before, fake or not (although perhaps he would have benefited from one when he was younger). I can guarantee that Siegfried will be able to cope with what goes on at Landel’s – this is the guy who used to wake up to find he’d slaughtered entire towns in his sleep whilst Soul Edge possessed his body, and if he can cope with that, he’ll cope at Landel’s.

Third-Person Sample:

Siegfried was flying through the air. He hadn’t expected Nightmare to grab his sword and throw him violently across the cathedral, and he was a little shocked, though he didn’t want to admit it.

He was more shocked to find that he’d hit the ground sooner than expected and pain exploded at the back of his skull. Reflexively he squeezed his eyes shut against the impact, and willed his body to move before Nightmare was able to cause more serious damage to him whilst he laid stunned on the stone floor. He rolled to the side, hoping to avoid any blows from Nightmare’s sword.

There was the sensation of falling, and Siegfried gasped, instinctively bringing his arms up to lesson the damage. Something was not right. The floor of the cathedral was level, there was no way he could be falling! Unless his mind was playing tricks on him, but he did not want to think of that possibility.

He hit the ground for a second time, only it was not stone beneath his body. It was a softer material, like a fabric. He opened his eyes. It was a carpet.

He bolted upright and looked around, the expression on his face showing his confusion. He was in a small windowless room that was very lacking in colour, everything was white or a close variation of it. The only light in the room was being emitted from a glass object that Siegfried did not recognise. There was a desk, dresser and closet in the room, and beside him, a metal-framed bed. Siegfried judged from the distance of his most recent fall that he had apparently fallen off the bed.

Siegfried frowned. This did not make any sense. The last he knew he had been fighting Nightmare at the abandoned cathedral he’d found, and now he woke up in a small room that was very simply furnished. It did not look at all inviting.

Perhaps this was some kind of illusion created by Soul Edge. It made sense in his mind that the cursed sword would use this sort of trickery, it had done the same before. If it was, Siegfried had not known of this power previously – changing your surroundings in an instant. Soul Edge must have gained the ability whilst Nightmare had been gathering souls. If that was the case, then Siegfried had to be on his guard. A foolish move here could result in his death, or, the more likely event of Siegfried losing control of his body once more, and Nightmare continuing the slaughter of innocent people.

This was not good. Siegfried was trapped in an illusion created by Soul Edge, with no knowledge of how to escape. The lack of knowledge already put Siegfried at a disadvantage, the fact that this was Soul Edge’s illusion and it was in control was even worse. Siegfried needed to think fast, or else he could be overwhelmed.

Siegfried reached for the sword on his back and found nothing. In his initial confusion, he had not even noticed that he was unarmed. In fact, now that he was concentrating more, he noticed another thing was wrong. He wasn’t wearing his armour, instead he was clothed in a shirt and pants of a grey material.

He was unarmed, in an unknown place, in what he had convinced himself was an illusion of Soul Edge’s, and he had no idea how to get out.

This, Siegfried realised, was very, very bad.

Apparently this place is called Landel’s Institute, although none of the other patients know exactly where this Institute is located. More worryingly, none of those who I have spoken to know how they got here. This could cause some problems in my plan to escape.

Still, I must have hope. Eventually I will find a way out, and resume searching for a way to destroy that cursed blade. I do not wish to know of the destruction it causes in my absence.
